I just had a fabulous lunch (steak, loaded baked potato, garlic bread, sweet pickles and a carmel apple tartlet) prepared at home (low sodium, yay!).
The first phase of getting my eating habits in order has been to severely restrict my intake of both restaurant and processed foods. The good news is, the "falling off the wagon" episodes are getting less frequent, yet the repercussions are becoming more severe. Let me tell you, the biggest indicator that restaurants and processed foods are killing us is how good you feel once you stop eating that crap.
For now, I'm still buying bread at a bakery, but I'm moving towards baking my own bread at home (and possibly milling my own flour as well, not sure I'll go that far overboard yet, though I do have most of the equipment already).
One of the keys to getting me to eat at home has been to buy restaurant quality ingredients. The Omaha Steak Store has become one of my favorite haunts. If you shop their sales, take the time to use their coupons and get their "frequent buyer" card, you really can't beat their prices. For one thing, you can buy in 4-5 oz. portion sizes, which is what KILLS you even in the regular supermarket. Everything is big big big.
So that's what I've been doing of late, just getting into a routine that I can stay with for the rest of my life, and learning to enjoy cooking for one. (That was seriously hard for me to do. For the longest time, cooking for one just made me feel lonely).
Next weekend: Spring Cleaning.
Ciao for now.
