I just got back from the hospital. Dad is alert and complaining... this is a good thing. I think it's going to be a much longer road to recovery than he would like, but we'll make it through.
I spent a whole lot more time reading up on the procedures he had done, and I'm a little miffed at his doctors. If what he says is true, they sugar-coated everything and left Dad with unrealistic expectations. Especially since he had both procedures done at the same time. *ALL* of the medical journals I consulted stated 1-2 weeks in the hospital (they told him 4-5 days), and 6-8 weeks before returning to even a sedentary job (instead of 2 weeks like they told him). I don't think they realize what an active lifestyle Dad leads, and some of the websites even said that it might be months before they could do strenuous activities (perhaps never). Dad is constantly helping with the remodeling around the house. Thank God its mostly done already. He's already complaining about having to lie in bed, and it's only going to get worse from here from that perspective. The thing I've always been the most worried about is him "over-doing" it after the surgery.
How I'm going to handle the coming weeks is up in the air still. Obviously, at first I'm going to need to stay at Dad's house. Even after that, however, I think I'm going to need to move here to be closer to him. He's had 3 hospitalizations in the last year and it's just too tough to keep an eye on him from Atlanta.
I don't really want to sell my house in Atlanta though, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to be looking for tenants instead of selling. If I can get it rented at a reasonable price, I can buy something here in Columbia.
Ciao for now.
