OK, when I stay home from work sick, I don't normally expect that have any meaningful adventures. However, I did venture out twice today. The first time, I was going to go get lunch and pick up some medicinal supplies to care for myself with. I ate lunch at my favorite Chinese buffet, Jade Palace (Chinese food always clears my sinuses and makes me feel better... Got a big pot of green tea down... good for my fluid intake). Then I was going to stop by Target, but Jesus, you'd think the whole world was still on vacation. It was packed at like 2 o'clock in the afternoon. I didn't want to deal with the crowd, so I went home.
I putzed around on the computer for a while, and then realized I really did need to go get medicinals or I wasn't going to get any better. I also needed a light bulb for my halogen lamp in the living room and wanted to dump a load of change into Coinstar as long as I was going to the grocery store.
Now, this all might not have been worth mentioning (everything was still crowded, bleh), except for the fact that they've got this new gizmo at the Kroger near my house. There were huge lines at the checkout, even the express lane, when I noticed this row of machines over to the side with a sign that said "U Check - 1 to 15 items, Cash, ATM or Credit Card." I wandered over and sure enough, it's a self-service check out line. Now why in the hell are these other people still standing in line for the Express Lane when they could just walk up to this gizmo and do their business?
Anyway, I checked out my 5 items, stuck in my $20 bill, it spit my change back out and I was on my way. This is *extremely* cool. Or, maybe it's just the geek in me. Anyway, it's still not enough to bring me back into the store on a regular basis.
I'm having a love affair with Webvan.
Ciao for now.
